ConFusion’s main address but
the telephone will be faster.)
Dear Artist,
On behalf of the Ann Arbor Science Fiction Association and the Stilyagi
Air Corps I would like to invite you to participate in the Art Show at
Michigan's oldest and largest Science Fiction Convention. This year we
will be adding a model contest. Also, in honor of the artists and the art
show staff, Melody and Randy Asplund-Faith will be hosting a party on
Friday night. In addition, we are proud to present to you our Artist
Guest of Honor, the world renowned illustrator of MAGIC: THE GATHERING
and creator of DRAGON STORM, Susan Van Camp.
Registration Special!
We are offering a special convention membership discount to exhibiting
artists and their families (anyone living at the artist's address) if they
pre-register by December 31. You may save $5 on each adult membership
(normally $25 until December 31; your price $20) you purchase through this
plan. You will also avoid having to stand in line at the registration
desk because we will give you your membership badge when you check into
the art show!
Our 3-D model contest offers a chance to show off a special kind of art.
Models may be cross entered in the art show if they meet originality
guidelines. Model contest entry fee is $0.25 per piece. Ribbons will be
awarded for the best in:
- Modified Kit
- Kit Bash/Scratch Built/or Diorama
- Painting of model or miniature
ConFusion Art Show Rules
The Art Show will have two separate parts. The Main show is where the
original works will be found, awards given, and pieces may be bid upon.
The Print Shop is where all reproductions (see definition in Art Show
rules below) will be displayed at fixed prices.
Payments to artists will be mailed within two weeks of the show.
Fees
Both the main show and the print shop will be charging a 10% commission on
sales. There are no "per panel" fees, but we will be charging $0.25 per
piece display fee for each piece entered in the Main Show. Print Shop
will charge $0.25 for each distinct type of print entered in the print
shop. No charge for multiples of the display print sample.
Eligibility
ConFusion runs on an SF & F literary theme. All entered works should be
related to the Science, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, or Fannish
theme. Please, no mainstream.
Although we do not wish to censor art, remember that there will be
children present and we want the fans to enjoy the art show, not be
offended by it. Artists are on the honor system of good judgement,
however, if your work would get yanked off Cinnemax or Showtime there is a
chance we might do the same. If you have questions, please ask the Art
Show Director.
Work should be original. If model kits or miniatures are entered they
should be significantly modified by structure or by painting to maintain a
semblance of originality.
Display
All 2-D art must have some rigid structure to prevent flapping and damage.
Loose leaf pieces will not be allowed to hang.
2-D Hanging displays are of two types. 4' high by 8' wide pegboard
panels, and 3' x 3' panels of pegboard or fabric. Works will be hung with
pegboard hooks or clips hung from pegboard hooks.
3-D art will be displayed on standard 2' x 8' tables. Please make prior
arrangements with the art show if you have large free-standing work.
ConFusion takes security responsibilities very seriously, but we can't
watch all pieces at all times. We will be disallowing all coats and bags
larger than personal handbags, but small pieces may be at risk.
Therefore, ConFusion will not be responsible for loss of very small
pieces. We recommend that you protect small works by supplying your own
display case. We will be keeping an eye out, but your best defense is to
put small items near the front in view of the desk.
There will be no photgraphy or cameras allowed in the Art Show.
Artists may include name plates and promotional fliers or cover flats,
etc, with their display, within reason.
Once art is entered into the Art Show it may not be removed or the price
modified until close of the show, however additional pieces and prints may
be entered.
Display space will be allocated on a first come - first served basis.
There will be no pre-registration, except by special arrangement with the
art director. Such cases include artists who know they will need a larger
area to keep works together or hang large pieces, and art staff volunteers
who will work 6 or more hours in the show.
Mail-In Art
If you wish to send us Art, please begin by sending a 4x9.5 inch SASE with
the Mail-In Registration form to arrive at Randy Asplund-Faith's by
December 31, 1996. Your Bid Sheets and Control Sheets will then be sent.
Canadian artists may receive this mailing later. I am sorry about that
but it was unavoidable. You may fax the request from Canada and we will
send you forms if you are not planning to attend.
There will be no surcharge for mail-in art. Mail-in art must include
sufficient postage and packaging for return with checks made out to
AASFA/ConFusion. ConFusion will not be responsible for loss or damage in
mailing. Art will be returned within one week of the convention. Packing
instructions should be included if you want it packaged in a specific way.
Send all mail-in art in care of Randy Asplund-Faith at his above address.
Art must arrive by January 23, 1996 or it will be returned unopened. All
mail-in art must be accompanied by official ConFusion control sheets, bid
sheets and print sheets filled out completely in order to be hung. Art
should be physically suitable for display as described in the rules above.
If you have ANY prints, read the Print section.
Prints and Print Shop
The print shop will have table and vertical displays where one sample of
each type will be displayed. All multiple copies of the same will be
vended from the front desk.
The copy on display must be protected by board, matt, frame, etc. but
additional copies may be loose. The display copy in the frame may be
offered for sale (pick-up at end of show) for a different price than loose
multiples to account for framing. Please mark print ID sheet.
There is no limit on print run size, but the run size must be indicated on
the ID sheet.
All prints must be marked or tagged identifying the Title and Artist.
Please limit the number of multiples to eight of a type, including the
display copy. You may enter as many different types as you wish.
Reasonable exceptions to the entry rules may be discussed with the Art
Show Director.
Print Shop Check-In Procedure
Hang one sample of each of your print types on the display. Fill out a
print shop control sheet. Also fill out a print identification sheet to
attach to the displayed print. Take the yellow copy of the ID sheet and
place this with the appropriate stack of multiples. Then present these at
the print shop desk with your control sheet.
Main Art Show Originals
All Main Art Show entries must be original works. For a print to qualify
as original it must have required hands-on work in the production process.
This includes retouched or tinted photos, serigraphs, etchings, block
prints and stone pulled lithos, etc. All other reproductions must go to
the print shop.
Entries in the main show are eligible for the following awards: Best in
Show; and both amateur and professional categories of Best 2-D SF, Best
3-D SF, Best 2-D Fantasy
Best 3-D Fantasy. Award winners automatically go to auction unless marked
NFS (Not for Sale).
Three bids send a piece to auction.
Main Art Show Check-In Procedure
When you arrive with your art, go ahead and pick a place in the main
section and put up your work. Get a Control Sheet and fill it out. Fill
out a bid sheet for each piece and attach it to the art with tape or place
it nearby and put a sticker (which you provide) bearing the artist name
and piece number next to or on the art. Make sure all art is labeled with
your name and title of piece in case bid sheets and art get separated.
Next, get a staff member who will check to be sure that everything is
accounted for. Finally, present your control sheet and payment at the
desk.
Artist Check-Out
Artists may check out Sunday between 12 and 2 pm. If you need to be let
out earlier, please make arrangements with the Art Show Director. To
check-out, get your control sheet from the control desk and account for
the remaining art. Then pack your art. If you leave early and have a
piece which has been bid upon, but not picked up and paid for, you may
choose to take it back, but you will not be paid for it. We cannot hold a
work after you leave without arrangements. When you have packed and have
accounted for your work, present the control sheet to the control desk.
Your record will be the yellow copy of the control sheet and will be given
to you when your account is paid in full.
